Alleppey (Alappuzha) district occupies a prominent place in the tourist map of Kerala interlocked with lakes and canals.The Vembanad Lake stretching up to Kochi, the rivers Achankovil, Manimala and Pamba and a net work of canals in the district are used for inland navigation. The vast stretch of paddy fields of Kuttanad, which is popularly known as the ‘rice bowl of Kerala,’ is in this district. Coir and coir products form a thriving industry in this district. The exciting and unforgettable boat cruises between Alleppey and Kollam offer intimate glimpses of backwater life and an unforgettable journey watching Coir making, boat building, toddy tapping, fish farming and the rugged village life.

Alleppey, the Headquarters of the district, is an ancient centre of trade and commerce. The town is popularly known as ” VENICE OF THE EAST’. The most famous attraction in Alleppey is the NEHRU CUP SNAKE BOAT RACE.

Alappuzha or Alleppey is also home to Kuttanad, The rice bowl of kerala, one of the very few places in the world where farming is done below sea level.

Kuttanad is the most beautiful backwaters region of Kerala. It is here that most of the snake boat races are conducted and a majority of the rice boat & houseboat cruises are scheduled.

Kerala's network of navigable backwaters stretches to over 900km. These serene waterways are fringed by palm grove and paddy fields and offer a striking spectacle of the rustic life.

In Alleppey or Alappuzha, the life revolves around water.  Cildren learn to swim before they walk.  They learn to row boats before they bicycle.  They learn their first lesson from the school of fish.

  Alleppey is a beautiful place located on the west coast of india. Alleppey is famous for its backwaters and the house boats. The climate is excellent throughout the year. The restaurants at alleppey are known for the tasty sea foods they provide.

Alleppey is well connected by roads to trivandrum,kollam,ernakulam and kottayam. From trivandrum, KSRTC buses are available to alleppey from 5 a.m to 8 p.m. The national highway 47 connects trivandrum to alleppey. The journey takes 3 - 3.5 hrs and we have to pass through kollam. Kollam has a small but beautiful beach.House boats are available for the travellers for stay along with food facilities. Some of the ayurveda medical centres are located on the backwaters which are frequented by tourists from all over the world.
